The Malta of a century ago! Over a 100-year-old photo shows a completely different Tigne
A time gone by!

A photo uploaded by Lawrence Marsh to the Facebook group ‘Old photos in Malta’, shows a landscape that many might not recognise instantly.

The 113-year-old photo shows the Tigne Barracks built on the Tigne Penninsula in Sliema and although the area is still known as Tigne to this day, it has a completely different look.

Nowadays, there is a shopping centre as well as many outside cafes and restaurants occupying the square, but this was not always the case.

The photo depicts a very quiet square with a few men resting on a bench nearby as their cart rests next to them.

Tigne Barracks were built for the British soldiers stationed in Sliema. Many British families and children lived there.

After the British left, everything was abandoned and the whole are went into ruin. The buildings were then demolished in 2001 and rebuilt as we know of them today.
