Tal-Habbaziz! Do you remember the North African street traders selling all kinds of products in Valletta?
The street vendors used to come and leave Malta by ship through the grand harbour.

Those who remember the Old Valletta are bound to recall the North African traders, more commonly and locally known as tal-habbaziz.

They used to come from their home countries by ship and would sell all kinds of different products and goodies in the streets of Valletta.

The street traders used to carry large straw baskets around which held all their merchandise.

They would mostly sell lakumja, otherwise known as the delicious Turkish delight or nuts.

Uploaded by John C. Navarro, the photo above depicts the exact scene of all the North African vendors with their Maltese customers.
