History lovers and curious explorers – listen up! Next month will bring an exciting opportunity to experience one of Malta’s most remarkable military landmarks that’s usually closed to the public, as Fort Manoel hosts a special Open Day on Sunday 6th April, from 9 AM to 5 PM.
This event offers the public a rare chance to explore the fort's stunning restoration, walk through its historic corridors, and take in some truly breathtaking views of Marsamxett Harbour from the fort’s viewpoints.
Visitors can also join free guided tours to gain deeper insight into the fort’s fascinating past. There will be tours in Maltese at 10 AM and 1.30 PM, and in English at 12 PM and 3 PM. The best part – all tours and admission to the fort are completely free of charge!
Perched on Manoel Island, this baroque masterpiece was commissioned in 1723 by Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena of the Knights of St. John. Over the years, Fort Manoel has played many roles – from an extension of the Lazzaretto Hospital in the 1800s to its time under British rule, when it was renamed HMS Phoenicia.
After suffering significant damage during World War II, the fort was painstakingly restored in the early 2000s, bringing it back to its former glory. Today, it stands as a testament to Malta’s rich military heritage.
If you plan on visiting, you can cross over onto Manoel Island with your car – there’s plenty of parking available. Stay updated and get more info via Manoel Island's Facebook page.
