The theatre season returns with a bang this month, featuring three exciting productions running on consecutive weekends at Theatre Next Door, nestled in the rural outskirts of Naxxar.

Each production is the work of independent young theatre makers, offering fresh perspectives and new energy to Malta’s theatre scene. Here’s a glimpse of what they have in store for the coming weeks.

Safergrounds

Dates: 20th-22nd September

With the alluring catchphrase ‘A little riot never hurt anyone’, the production ‘Safergrounds’ presented by Busli collective offers a satirical take on a dystopian world where queer individuals are confined to a so-called ‘Safe Haven’. This performance promises to be an interactive one, so choose your seating wisely!

1x1 – A Collection of New Monologues

Dates: 27th-29th September

As the title suggests, this production by Chewing Productions showcases original monologues written, directed, designed, and performed by local theatre practitioners. The four solo performances explore a range of themes, from social media to climate change, skilfully balancing comedy and drama. Performances will be in both Maltese and English, with English surtitles provided throughout.

‘Mid-Djarju Ta' Student Fi Skola Tal-Knisja’

Dates: 4th-6th October, 8th-10th November, 15th-17th November, 22nd-24th November

This solo play, by rising actor Jamie Cardona and directed by Vikesh Godhwani, has sold out multiple times thanks to Cardona's bold portrayal of his teenage self during his time at a church school. The performance delves into the tension between navigating moral lessons and figuring out how to attract girls, offering a candid and engaging reflection on adolescence.
