Metsola was up against three other MEPs.
MEP Roberta Metsola has just made history after becoming the youngest and first ever Maltese person to lead the European Parliament (EP).
Metsola was up against three other MEPs – Alice Bah Kuhnke, a Swede representing the Greens/EFA Group, Sira Rego, a Spaniard representing the GUE/NGL Group, and Kosma Zlotowski, a Pole representing the ECR Group.
Voting started at 9:30am this morning and last for 45 minutes, until 10:15am. Another 45 minutes were allocated to vote counting.
Metsola was made Acting President of the EP on 11th January 2022, following the passing of then-President David Sassoli.
Before that, the Maltese MEP served as First Vice-President of the EP after getting elected to the post in November 2020. Metsola was the first Maltese MEP to ever occupy said role.
The new EP President’s will last two-and-a-half years.
Well done, Roberta!
