Safe haven! ‘Great Wall of Gozo’ built at Ramla Bay to protect turtle eggs in remaining nest
“From dawn till dusk, they labour and strive, giving the weakest a chance to thrive.”

The Gozo branch of Nature Trust has praised the dedicated volunteers who are safeguarding the eighth and final turtle nest of the season at Ramla l-Hamra Bay. Their efforts have been bolstered by the creation of the 'Great Wall of Gozo', a sand barrier designed to shield the nests from strong northwest winds and waves, which reached heights of 2.2 meters last week and posed a significant threat.

The perseverance and effort of these volunteers inspired Prof Yashraj Patil to write a touching poem dedicated to all those working tirelessly at keeping the nests safe. The poem salutes them, as “From dawn till dusk, they labour and strive, giving the weakest a chance to thrive.”

Given the strength of the winds in the past week and the ensuing rough seas particularly at any northwest-facing beaches, the Wildlife Rescue Team has expressed the challenges they’ve been facing in this task and appealed to the public for help in the protection of the last turtle nests at both Golden Bay in Malta and Ramla Bay in Gozo.

In fact, Ambjent Malta has just announced their collaboration with Nature Trust Malta to help them in these final weeks of turtle season, especially given the storms forecast for this week.
