Remarkable! Giuseppe Cali' painting at St Laurence’s Birgu Parish Church restored to former glory
A Cali' masterpiece!

Emma Galea

Yesterday, at the Parish Church of St Lawrence in Birgu, a new restoration project was inaugurated.

The painting on the choir ceiling was restored back to former glory by the Maltese restoration ReCoop.

It depicts the apotheosis of St Laurence and it was painted by none other than the prestigious Maltese Italian painter, Giuseppe Cali'.

Additionally, the figures found by the windows and sides of the St Laurence paintings were also fully restored.

Works on the painting were carried out by Manuel Farrugia while Roderick Busuttil, helped by David Piscopo, took care of gliding and paint. Pawlu Spiteri did the work on the stone and roof.

The project had been going on for the past two years and it can now be fully enjoyed by the public once again.

Well done to everyone involved!
