Recognise them? 90s photo shows Jackie Bartolo and Ray Calleja performing Commedia dell'Arte at the Manoel Theatre
What a throwback!

As Carnival rolls around and masks abound, local artist Jeremy Grech brought a wave of nostalgia and creativity with a revival of Commedia dell'Arte. This improvisational theatre form, which originated in Italy during the 16th century, has found a special place in Malta’s cultural scene over the years.

Recently, Jeremy shared a photo on Facebook that features popular local actors Jackie Bartolo and Ray Calleja in full costume during a 90s Commedia dell'Arte performance at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta.

Jeremy, who is passionate about preserving and reviving the art of Commedia dell'Arte, is holding a series of free workshops that explores the rich history of the genre, its iconic characters, and some fantastic live performances over four evenings, the last of which takes place today.

If you're still stuck on what costume to wear, why not draw some inspiration from this traditional theatrical form? Commedia dell'Arte's vivid harlequin costumes and expressive masks are a perfect vibe for the playful spirit of the upcoming weekend!

Have you ever experienced a Commedia dell'Arte performance?
