Ready, set, go! Maltese athletes head to Gibraltar for Small State Championships
This will be the fifth edition of the championships

17 Maltese athletes are making their way to the Championships of Small States of Europe (CSSE), taking place at the Lathbury Sports Complex in Gibraltar. The championships are set to begin on the 22nd of June.

Team Malta

This event differs from the Games of Small States of Europe (GSSE) in that it involves more participating nations, including Georgia, North Macedonia, Armenia, and Moldova.

In fact, the Maltese team will be competing against the best athletes from 17 other European countries.

Malta hosted the last edition of the Championships which took place in 2022. The two local athletes Claire Azzopardi and Janet Richard won three gold medals between them and will be competing once again in this year’s edition in Gibraltar.

Other local athletes to watch are Gina McNamara who won three gold medals at last year’s GSSE in Malta in the 800m, 1500m and 5000m as well as Beppe Grillo, who has just achieved a 100m national record while competing in Turkey at the Balkan Athletics Championships in May.

The Maltese delegation will be accompanied by their coach Mario Bonello and is supported by Sport Malta and the Malta Olympic Committee.

Good luck to all the participating athletes!

20th June 2024
