Poor creatures! A total of four hedgehogs were rescued from Gozo this past week
Some of the hedgehogs saved are now on the road to recovery.

Gozo’s hedgehogs have not been having the greatest week as a total of four of them had to be rescued by Nature Trust in the last few days alone.

The first rescue was picked up in Xewkija. Leo, as he was named by the volunteers, was severely underweight because he had an internal bacterial infection.

Nello, the second rescue, was taken in from Ghasri after suffering through a dog bite. Thankfully, the bite was not that severe and the hedgehog is recovering nicely.

The third rescue was thankfully not injured but he was found in a busy street in Sannat and would have soon been run over. He was then relocated to a much safer greener area. Nature Trust advised that one should not relocate a hedgehog on their own but should instead call them so they “can assess if the hedgehog is healthy and if it is a lactating female with possible hoglets depending on it”.

Unfortunately, the fourth rescue ended with the hedgehog passing away. He was a young hoglet who was very weak when found and passed away a few hours later. The poor creature likely ingested poison.

They also gave an update on Monty who was rescued a few weeks ago after being hit with a strimmer. Thankfully, he’s recovering very well!
