Modern chimes! Newly computerised bell-ringing system at Ta’ Savina Church in Gozo
The church in its original state was one of the earliest church buildings in Gozo, first documented in the 15th century
The belfry of Ta’ Savina Church in Rabat, on the sister island of Gozo, has just received an upgrade, with the installation of a computerised system for the ringing of the bells. A mechanised hammer has been put into place to allow for the bells to be rung on command through the system, rather than having someone ascend to the belfry to ring the bells manually.
Ta’ Savina Church can be found in Pjazza Savina, just off the main road running through Rabat, close to the area known as ‘It-Tokk’ where the daily morning market is held.
Ta' Savina was one of the earliest church buildings in Gozo, with one of its first documented mentions in 1479. Following the invasion of Gozo by the Ottoman Empire in 1551, it stopped being used until it was rebuilt in the early 1900s.
