This month, the Palm Court Lounge at the Phoenicia Hotel in Floriana will host the exhibition ‘Midsummer Diaries’, curated by Dr Charlene Vella, showcasing the local artist Mariam De Giorgio’s second solo exhibition.

Midsummer diaries

As the name suggests, the works displayed at ‘Midsummer Diaries’ portray the artist’s experience of summers in Malta, taking viewers in a journey around the island, from a tranquil scene in Valletta to an August sunset at Gnejna and even a trip on the Gozo ferry.

Other works of the artists, however, bring beauty to the more mundane moments of summer, featuring a baby’s bath and a garden breakfast imbued with various bright colours reminiscent of summer. Such works elevate the quiet moments of the artist’s life, alone or with her children, to ones of deep beauty and tenderness, containing vivid textures that bring the paintings to life.

Despite specialising in acrylic painting and illustration, Mariam De Giorgio has also experimented with ink, watercolours and mixed media, with a style that lends to a fantasy world. In fact, the artist has illustrated several children’s books, including ‘Sensiela Fanali’ and ‘Juliet finds peace in the President’s secret garden’.

‘Midsummer Diaries’ is on display until 30th September – don’t miss it!
