Meet Consiglia, the street vendor that sells cheese & veggies from an old pushchair in Zejtun
Consiglia, the queen!

Jillian Mallia

Street vendors were all the rage back in the day with many business people taking to the streets to sell their produce – milk, flowers, cheese, veggies, you name it. Jean-Paul from Kappa Vision captured one of the few street vendors left on the islands in action. “When was the last time you bought cheese and vegetables from a local street vendor with an old pushchair?” he asks.

“Somewhat of a dying breed, it was a pleasant surprise to come across Consiglia as she was on her way to the Żejtun square to sell her daily fresh produce. Sheep cheeselets (gbejniet), garlic, onions, eggs and potatoes: her pram was packed to the brim!”

“We took a bag of her onions and a box of gbejniet tal-bzar (the peppered ones) for a ridiculously cheap price - and they were the freshest and best we ever ate!”
