Malteserkirche! Did you know about the stunning Maltese church found right in the heart of Vienna?
The history of the church dates all the way back to over 800 years ago.

If you visited Vienna at same point in your life you might have come cross the stunning church of Saint John Baptist but did you know the church is actually a Maltese one?

Commonly known as the Malteserkirche, the church is found right in the heart of city, very close to the nearby opera house and St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

Nonetheless, what is the reason that a church found in the middle of Vienna in Austria is referred to as the Maltese church?

The church belongs to Sovereign Military Order of Malta, which is the modern successor of the Order of the Knights of St John. The church is in fact dedicated to Saint John the Baptist as he is the patron of the order.

Its history dates all the way back to the time of the Crusades in 1217, where the area was used as a refuge for those travelling to Jerusalem.

However, the first church building was built in 1265 but the church standing in Vienna today was built in 1446. It also underwent extensive restoration during the 19th century where its characteristic bell tower was built.

When visiting the church, its high altarpiece will instantly catch your eye. This absolute marvel was painted by Johann Georg Schmidt in 1730.

Make sure to visit on your next trip to Vienna if you haven’t yet!
