Have you ever heard the old Maltese saying linking the weather to two feasts in November and December?
One of the feasts is celebrated today!

Francesca Vella

Ever heard the old Maltese saying ‘Jekk toħroġ is-seftura, toħroġ is-Sinjura’? It literally translates to ‘If the maid goes out, so will the mistress’, but is actually a reference to the Feasts of St Catherine and the Immaculate Conception.

According to the saying, if the Feast of St Catherine, celebrated today, on the 25th of November, brings good weather, the same should be expected on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which takes place on the 8th of December.

Both are dates around which Malta expects some of its worst weather of the year, which is probably where this saying originated from - in fact, St Catherine is even considered to be the patron saint of storms!

If the saying stands true, today’s good weather bodes well for the 8th of December too, but it’s too soon to tell!

Are you hoping for good weather on the 8th December?

25th November 2025
