‘Fuq il-Festa’! Celebrating the Maltese festa, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
The Maltese village feast is one of the top activities recommended to tourists visiting Malta during the summer, offering a vibrant glimpse into the island's rich cultural heritage, shaped over centuries. In recognition of its cultural significance, Maltese feasts have recently been officially acknowledged by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and the upcoming celebration, ‘Fuq il-Festa,’ pays tribute to this tradition.
Set for October 19th, the event aims to further highlight, celebrate, and promote the custom of village feasts. The day will begin with a mass at St. John’s Co-Cathedral at 5.30pm, followed by a marching band performance at Triton Square. Musicians from Malta and Gozo's Music Associations, under the direction of Maestro Jonathan Vella, will perform popular marches, synonymous with the Maltese feast.
Interactive workshops for children and families will provide insights into feast traditions, such as making the iconic nougat, or 'qubbajd,' which is a staple at any village celebration.
In conjunction with the event, a special edition deck of cards titled ‘Mazz Vari’, illustrated by renowned local artist Iella, will be launched. These cards beautifully depict iconic feast statues and provide fascinating details about each, including their creation dates, materials, and the number of bearers required to carry them.
The celebration will culminate in a grand fireworks display at 9pm, lighting up the Maltese skies in unison. Every fireworks factory across the islands will participate in this synchronised show, set to the Maltese anthem, symbolising unity and pride in the nation's cultural heritage.
