Exploring Maltese history! Discovering two Imqabba churches that are door to door to each other
One of the churches dates as far back as the 1400s.
Malta and Gozo are quite known for having loads of churches but none of which are in as much close proximity as these.
The southern locality of Mqabba is home to the two churches of St Michael and St Basil, which are found right next to each other.
Out of the two, the church of St Basil is the oldest one. Its history dates all the way back to 1400s. Although, in the 15th century the church was smaller when compared to the one we see today. The church was however enlarged in 1515, as was discovered from what was written on the church’s titular painting.
Back then, the zuntier (parvis) was not just used an entryway for the church but was also used as a burial ground, which is why in 1778, a monument was built as a way to honour the memory of those who rest there.
Just a few steps away, one can find the church dedicated to St Michael Archangel. This one is however a bit less old, having been built in the 16th century instead.
Although they are found next to each other, the style of this church is completely different than the one of St Basil’s.
