It’s all happening on the 17th of June.

MUŻA, the renowned Malta National Community Art Museum, is set to unveil the secrets of its remarkable Maiolica vessel collection through an exclusive book launch event on the 17th of June. These exquisite vessels, originally crafted by Venetian and Gerace artisans for the Order's Sacra Infermeria in Valletta, hold immense historical and cultural significance.

The extensive study surrounding this collection not only sheds new light on Malta's cultural and commercial ties with Calabria but also illuminates its connections with the Venetian Republic during the 16th and 17th centuries.

Chaired by Nathaniel Cutajar, the book launch will feature presentations by esteemed historians and experts in the field. Vincenzo Cataldo will delve into the socio-economic aspects of this exchange, while Isabelle C. Grima will provide in-depth insights into the Sacra Infermeria and its spezieria (pharmacy).

Mario Panarello will discuss the role of Calabria's maiolica production within the broader context of figurative artistic developments. Monica De Marco will highlight the significance of MUŻA's pharmacy jar series, featuring the coat of arms of Grand Master Wignacourt, in reconstructing the final phase of Venetian maiolica productions in the renowned style of Maestro Domenego.

The presentations will be conducted in both Italian and English, allowing a wider audience to engage with the rich historical narrative.

This extraordinary event has been organised under the joint patronage of Heritage Malta and the Malta Study Center (Hill Museum and Manuscript Library), further emphasising its importance within the cultural landscape.

Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase a limited number of copies of the publication, ensuring they can delve deeper into the fascinating world of maiolica vessels long after the event concludes.
