SKY ThinkTank, an aviation sustainable innovation company based in Gozo, along with its sister airline SKY Mobility (Malta) Ltd., has achieved a major milestone by obtaining operational authorisation for flight tests from the Civil Aviation Directorate at Transport Malta. This paves the way for Malta’s first air delivery service, ‘Flying ZERO’, marking a new era in logistics with drone deliveries, that will undoubtedly revolutionise the industry.

After two years of development and assessments, Flying ZERO will be ready for its commercial launch, following successful flight tests performed by Transport Malta.

The CEO Alexander Esslinger highlighted the transformative nature of the service, emphasising its ability to bypass road congestion and offer fast, sustainable, and safe deliveries.

Flying ZERO aims to establish a fully sustainable air delivery ecosystem using cutting-edge Swiss technology. The service will focus on key areas, including:

  • Healthcare – Partnered with St. James Hospital, Flying ZERO will ensure the rapid delivery of critical medical supplies, such as blood samples, between healthcare facilities.
  • Maritime Operations – It will expedite port-to-ship deliveries of essential items like bunker samples and medications, improving efficiency in maritime logistics.
  • Retail and E-Commerce – Offering fast, eco-friendly deliveries for small parcels and documents, supporting Malta’s growing e-commerce sector.

Flying ZERO’s advanced drone fleet includes the ZERO Air Lite and ZERO Air Manta, which can hold a maximum load of 3kg and 15kg respectively. Both have a maximum range of 100km, and they are designed for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations, which means that they do not need to remain within the visual range of their pilots.

They are also equipped with safety, privacy, and cyber security features. The fleet will contribute significantly to reducing Malta’s carbon footprint, in line with the nation’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

SKY ThinkTank will be exhibiting at the TechXpo event held at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali this month, where the innovative ZERO Air Lite drone will be showcased along with its applications in healthcare logistics.

Are you looking forward to receiving deliveries from the sky?
