A look at Italian contemporary movies: Cinema Italia @ Malta presents five of the most interesting movies of the past two years which have never been screened in the archipelago’s cinemas. A number of protagonists of these films will be present for some of the screenings that will take place from 21 to 26 May at Spazju Kreattiv.
Ammore e Malavita (Love and Bullets)

Directed by: Antonio Manetti, Marco Manetti
Length: 133 minutes
Winner of 5 David di Donatello in 2018 and other awards.
A hitman gets a second chance at love when he discovers that his new target is his old teenage crush, but together they'll have to shoot - and sing- their way to freedom. Directed by the Manetti brothers and starring Claudia Gerini and Carlo Buccirosso, the film can be considered a declaration of love for Naples in the style of a musical with a hint of black comedy.
Euforia

Length: 115 minutes
Euforia recounts the story of two brothers who after a dramatic event, find themselves forced to live together and to face their differences with sympathy and tenderness, in a climax of fear and euphoria. The film was presented in Cannes 2018 within the section Un Certain Regard. A fundamental role in this Italian style comedy is played by most loved Italian actors of contemporary cinema Riccardo Scamarcio and Valerio Mastandrea.
Testimone Invisibile(The Invisible Witness)

Length: 115 minutes
A young successful business owner (Riccardo Scamarcio) wakes up in a hotel room next to the lifeless corpse of his lover (Miriam Leone). It is the beginning of a tale which is patiently constructed, moves with the right pace and which generates in the audience a sense of surprise, doubt and suspense throughout the whole film.
Il Cratere (Crater)

Length: 93 minutes
Directed by Luca Bellino and Silvia Luzi and starring Sharon and Rosaria Carroccia, recounts the tale of a father, living in a cursed land who defies destiny by exploiting his daughter’s singing abilities. His pursuit of success turns into an obsession. This first full length film was presented during the Festival del Cinema di Venezia, within the SettimanadellaCritica and was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
Indivisibili (Indivisible)

Length: 100 minutes
Two siamese twins, blessed with beautiful voices, perform at weddings, communions and baptisms to earn their family’s livelihood. Their life turns upside-down when one of them falls in love for the first time and they discover that they can be separated and lead a normal life. A very original love story which is as realistic as much as it is dreamlike. The film was awarded the Premio Pasinetti per ilMiglior Film at the Festival del Cinema di Venezia and won four David di Donatello.
Cinema Italia @ Malta is an initiative of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Valletta organized together with SpazjuKreattiv and realized in collaboration with M.A. in Film Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Malta under the auspices of the Embassy of Italy.
