Culture for change! Art exhibition and literary event on climate change coming to Marsaskala this October
The photography and writings highlight the risks that climate change poses to island nations and coastal regions
The Rudy Buhler Art Gallery, located in the seaside town of Marsaskala in the south of Malta, is renowned for its focus on abstract exhibits. However, this month, the gallery will host two unique events that blend visual art and literature. The first is a photography exhibition titled ‘Living on the Edge’ by Peter Paul Barbara, opening this Friday 18th October. The second is a literary event organized by the local art and culture group, Inizjamed, taking place on Sunday 27th October.
In ‘Living on the Edge’, Peter Paul Barbara captures the effects of climate change with a particular focus on rising sea levels. Through his lens, the exhibition merges documentary realism with artistic interpretation, tackling themes such as melting glaciers, droughts, forest fires, and overdevelopment.

The exhibition combines factual insights with creative perspectives, using images of storms and rough seas alongside stunning imagery of natural elements. Its goal is to raise awareness about the threats posed by climate change, especially to island nations and coastal regions. The exhibition is organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, to highlight global diplomatic efforts addressing these issues.

To complement the exhibition, Inizjamed will host a literary event on the exhibition's closing day, Sunday 27th October. This event will feature readings from authors Keith Borg, Tyrone Grima, Omar N'Shea, and Loranne Vella, whose new writings explore the impact of climate change, particularly the rising sea levels that threaten island communities. The literary works will resonate with Peter Paul Barbara's evocative images, amplifying the message about the risks posed by extreme weather and environmental degradation.

Curated by Melanie Erixon, ‘Living on the Edge’ will run from Friday 18th October to Sunday 27th October, with gallery hours from Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 1pm, and 5pm to 8pm. The literary event will take place at 3pm on the final day.
