Bravi! Maltese production takes home award at Brighton Fringe Festival
‘The Trials of Magnus Coffinkey’ wins the Fringe Review Outstanding Theatre Award

Francesca Vella

The playwright couple Malcolm and Angele Galea had their hard work awarded at the Brighton Fringe Festival, being chosen out of more than 700 acts to win the Outstanding Theatre Award.

The play, directed by Philip Leone-Ganado and starring Joseph Zammit and Becky Camilleri, was staged twice in Malta before being taken to Brighton Fringe: once in May 2023 at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta and at the beginning of May at Blue Box Theatre in Msida.

Malcolm Galea describes ‘The Trials of Magnus Coffinkey’ as a fairy tale for grown-ups that deals with loss and grief, and tells the story of Magnus Coffinkey, who must fix a bell on top of an impossibly high spire to find his true love.

This is not the playwright’s first rodeo: Malcolm Galea also won Best Newcomer Award at the Brighton Fringe in 2022 for his solo show, Plastic and Chicken Bones.

We wish Malcolm and Angele Galea the best of luck in their future endeavours!
