An 18th century marvel! Discover this charming Hal-Safi chapel dedicated to St Mary
It was built on the designs of Anglu Bonnici.
Just a stone’s throw away from the Hal-Safi parish church, you’ll find this charming chapel dedicated to St Mary. It has a history dating back to 500 years ago.
The chapel was already built by 1575 as the first discovered reference to the chapel was made during this time by Monsignor Dusina, However, the chapel could be even older.
It was not always dedicated to St Mary, having only been dedicated to this saint in 1656 by Archbishop Belaguer. However, it was closed down soon after.
A few decades later a person by the name of Gwann Vitor asked for the chapel to be reopened to the public once again. As a result, the parish priest Matthew Xiriha consecrated the chapel once again in 1683.
Nonetheless, the structure of the chapel we find today in Hal Safi is not the same one that existed in the 16th and 17th century.
The chapel was re-built once again in 1764 with the money collected from nearby residents on the designs of the architect Anglu Bonnici.
It was fully restored just last year.
