A trip down memory lane! Do you remember ‘ic-Cappura’, Malta's potato chips street vendor?
He used to cook the chips in his van!

Emma Galea

A huge part of Maltese tradition that is fading throughout the years is that of street vendors going around villages across Malta and Gozo, selling all kinds of different products.

They used to arrive in a particular street and would shout at the top of their lungs, announcing their arrival. Housewives and children would come rushing out of their homes to buy whatever was being sold, be it fish, ice-cream or donuts!

Such street vendors originally started out selling their products on donkey or horse drawn carts but such vehicles were later replaced with vans and trucks.

One such street vendor was ‘Cappura’ who used to go around in his van selling potato chips that he would fry right there in his van!

A photo of him with his van was uploaded to the nostalgia page, ‘Zurrieq and its Surroundings’ and many commented on how much they used to love buying from him, and how delicious his chips were.

Do you think street vendors in Malta should make a comeback?
