A new lease on life! Three rescued birds from Malta given a second chance in Sicily
The birds were shot illegally earlier this Autumn.
Earlier this Autumn, three injured birds that were protected under the law were rescued by Bird Life after they were illegally shot.
Although it might have seemed that all was lost for them they have been given a second chance at life.
After making the necessary rehabilitation, they were successfully released at LIPU’s Saline Di Priolo Nature Reserve in Sicily.
The first bird, a European Honey-buzzard was rescued from San Martin in September while a Greater Flamingo and a Western Marsh-Harrier were found injured on the 1st October at Ta’ Cenc and Ghar Lapsi respectively.
Their recovery was two and half months long and all necessary care was given by BirdLife Malta with the assistance of WBRU-appointed veterinary surgeons. They were then taken to the neighbouring island of Sicily with the help of Virtu Ferries.
This was the second time that BirdLife relocated injured birds to Sicily, but this was the first time that the relocation included a flamingo and a Honey-Buzzard.
