A new discovery! Two historic water cisterns unearthed at the Birgu Square
The cisterns were found nearby where the Birgu watch tower once stood.

During the recent works carried at the square in Birgu, an exciting discovery relating to Malta’s history was made!

Two water cisterns were unearthed during the excavation, as revealed by the Facebook page ‘The Malta Underground’.

One of the cisterns seems to be quite compact and as explained by ‘The Malta Undeground’ the cistern is “topped by a fairly coarse masonry barrel vault”.

It was found relatively close to where the Medieval watchtower once stood. Perhaps this is not a coincidence but the two are in fact connected.

Most likely, litres and gallons of water used to be stored here whenever rain fell over the Three Cities.
