The shot is from the Moses Aquilina Collection.

A photo shared by Malta’s National Archives gives us a small glimpse into when the Holy Trinity Church of Marsa was being built.

The photo was taken around 1909, the same year construction on the church began, with the first stone being laid on October 20th, 1909—exactly 115 years ago today.

The church was built to accommodate the growing population in Marsa and surrounding villages, as many people were moving to the area following the construction of Porto Nuovo, which created numerous jobs for locals.

In the photo, several builders proudly pose as the church slowly takes shape behind them.

The church was officially inaugurated on 19th April in 1913, when it was also declared a parish. Remarkably, the entire construction was financed by a Valletta couple, Lorenzo and Carmela Balbi.

Have you ever visited this church?
