102 years ago today, Malta’s National Anthem was played for the first time at the Manoel Theatre
The anthem is written as a form of a hymn and prayer to God.
On the 27th December of 1922, exactly 102 years ago today, the Maltese national anthem was played for the first time for a public audience at the beautiful Manoel Theatre.
The anthem’s lyrics were written by the country’s national poet, Dun Karm Psaila while the music was composed by Maestro Robert Sammut.
During the early decades of the 20th century, Malta was passing through a national awakening which naturally resulted in the birth of the beloved national anthem.
After being played in the Manoel Theatre the anthem started being played in many schools across the islands.
However, the anthem was not declared as the official one until 1941. It was printed and published in 1942, helping to increase its popularity across the islands.
When independence was given to Malta in 1964, the anthem was then again confirmed as the National Anthem of Malta and is still loved and played on many occasions to this day.
