Making history! Julie Micallef becomes first Gozitan girl to represent Malta at Under-18 water polo level

Gozo has reached a significant milestone in water polo, as 13-year-old Julie Micallef becomes the first Gozitan girl to represent Malta at Under-18 level in the sport.

Otters Aquatic Club announced the achievement with pride, describing it as an important moment for the club and the wider Gozitan community. Julie is currently playing for Valkaj Ági in Hungary, continuing her development in the sport while reaching new heights in her young career.

Her selection reflects her dedication, commitment and talent, while also highlighting the opportunities available to young athletes from Gozo to compete at higher levels.

According to Otters Aquatic Club, Julie’s accomplishment is also a reflection of the club’s ongoing development, both technically and administratively. Through its focus on grassroots sport, the club continues to nurture young talent, strengthen coaching and create pathways for athletes to pursue their sporting ambitions.

The club believes that investing in young players and providing them with the right support can help them progress beyond local competition and achieve success on a wider stage.

Julie’s achievement is particularly significant for aspiring female athletes in Gozo, demonstrating that age and geographical location need not limit sporting ambitions.

Well done, Julie!
