Many took to social media to express their shock at the passing of Sliema-born Alex Calì, dubbed Malta's original free thinker, who died in Gozo where he had been residing for the past few years.

The grandson of renowned Maltese painter Giuseppe Calì, Alex rescinded social conventions despite being born in a well-to-do family. He travelled widely across Europe before returning back to Malta and enjoyed stints working as an organic farmer, and more recently as a co-manager in one of Gozo's most popular bars, Zeppi's in Qala.

"I remember you, Alex Cali, intelligent, caring and kind. I think of you and I remember art, music, love and laughter. You were a unique friend," Isabelle Gatt wrote, in a post commemorating the man. Marie Briguglio also paid tribute to Alex, writing: "Rest in Peace dear Alex Cali, you gentle soul.

RIP Alex.

When she’s not having a quarter-life crisis, Caroline is either drawing in a café, frittering her salary on sushi or swearing at traffic in full-on Gozitan. There is also the occasional daytime drink somewhere in the equation. Or two. A creative must be allowed at least one vice.
