What an honour! Maltese Lira Clock moves closer to European recognition

The traditional Maltese Lira Clock is one step closer to European recognition, as efforts continue to protect Malta’s distinctive craftsmanship and create new opportunities for local artisans.

The progress was highlighted during an information session organised by MEP Peter Agius, bringing Maltese craftspeople together with European experts to explore the European Union’s new framework for Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products (CIGIs).

The initiative allows producers to protect products whose reputation, quality or distinctive characteristics are linked to their geographical origin. This can help preserve traditional skills, distinguish authentic products from imitations and strengthen their position in international markets.

The Lira Clock is already at an advanced stage in the recognition process and has received financial assistance from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

During the session, artisans specialising in lace-making, filigree, Lira Clock making and weaving learned more about the registration process and available financial support.

Elton Micallef of the Maltese Crafts Foundation also outlined the work being undertaken to secure European recognition for the Lira Clock, involving several skilled craftspeople.

For Malta, the framework offers an opportunity to safeguard traditional crafts, preserve skills passed down through generations and help distinctive local products reach wider markets, while giving consumers greater confidence in their authenticity.
