Renting a kayak or paddle boat is a good place to start if you’re trying your hand at a water sport for the first time. Both are slow-paced and man-powered, but also lots of fun. Team up with a friend and paddle or row your way out to sea in a kayak or paddle boat for a leisurely ride.

What paddle boats and kayaks don’t have is speed, so if that’s what you’re after, a jet ski is a step in the right direction. Explore caves and hidden beaches on a jet ski, available at numerous beaches around the islands. Prices for one or two persons for 15 or 30 minutes range from €35 to €70.

Even if you’re afraid of heights, you should try paragliding at least once during your stay. It’s not as ‘extreme’ as it’s hyped up to be – quite the contrary, in fact, as you’re taken on a scenic tour of Malta’s coastline from the air, from the comfort and safety of a harness.

This is the water sport you’ll want to try for a true adrenaline rush. Finding your balance may take a few tries, but once you do, you’ll be skimming above the water like a boss, and feeling like a superhero as you twist and turn while negotiating the waves.

Slow things down with a paddle boarding session while exploring some of Malta and Gozo’s hidden gems. Paddle boarding entails propelling yourself forward while lying, kneeling or standing on a board, but if that’s not exciting enough, try a session of SUP (stand up) yoga, which takes place at a number of beaches locally.

Fly up into the air during a flyboarding session, where a rider stands on a board connected by a long hose to a watercraft. Water forced under pressure through a pair of boots with jet nozzles thrusts the rider into the air in true adrenaline-junkie fashion.

One for the more experienced water sports enthusiasts, wind surfing is mastered with quite a bit of practice. But that’s not to say that you won’t find local instructors willing to help you give it a go if you’re a newbie, or go at it alone if you’ve got the experience!
