Your ultimate autumn bucket list for Malta & Gozo
You’ll want to do these a second time, and a third!

Kristina Cassar Dowling

Autumn has the power to energise even the most reluctant action-takers, making couch potatoes jump to their feet and get out of the confines their living rooms.

Go camping

A weekend spent in nature entices your sense of adventure, combats stress and lifts your spirits. Pack a tent, a hammock, a couple of beers and head over to your favourite camping spot.

Pack a picnic

Much like camping, an afternoon picnic reconnects you wish nature. The best picnic setup features a healthy supply of food and drink (especially for us Maltese!), a game or two and a good playlist. Remember to clean up after yourselves!

Organise a football tournament

Your reluctance exercise or even move at all during the summer is totally understandable, but autumn is the perfect season to plan a couple of football tournaments (or other sports of your choice) with your mates. Rent a pitch, get your crew together and kick a ball around.

Get your hiking shoes on

Malta and Gozo are full of beautiful cliffs, valleys and country roads that beckon local and visiting hikers, trekkers and casual adventurers. Locate your spot, pack a camera, some H2O, a good pair of shoes and you’re good to go.

Indulge in a fenkata

This one’s a local family favourite. Mgarr is one of the best localities to savour this local delicacy, if you haven't before. Organise a family meal, doll yourself up, drink some wine and dig into a fenkata (rabbit meal).

Try your hand at fishing

Head out to the jetty bright and early for the morning catch - there's nothing quite as peaceful! If you’re lucky enough to own your own luzzu (or know someone who does), grab your fishing rod and sail to the sun, and if you don't, you could always hop onto a charter.

Learn a new skill

Autumn is always a great time to take on a new project. Why not get your baking skills on point or learn a new language? Malta’s energy will keep your motivation up no matter what you choose to do!

... or trek around Comino

Just to add another spot of adventure - head to Comino for a day-long trek. The smallest of the three main islands, Comino is perfect for a trekking session with your gutsy mates.

Attend an exhibition

There are many exhibition destinations on the Maltese islands, particularly centring around the capital of Valletta. Look out for upcoming artists and hunt down the local masters to sample some of the best artworks.

Watch the waves

On a windy day, find a bench on the nearest promenade and watch the waves crash into the shores. You may need to stand back at times, as the sea spray might make its way to your bench!

Do something good

Giving back to the community is what keeps our boats afloat and keeps the karma wheels agoing. Choose your cause, devote your time or write up a cheque to do something for the greater good. There are several charities and NGOs in Malta and Gozo that will appreciate a helping hand.
