But why, are the Three Cities so special? Wanderlust gives a rundown of why your next visit should be to the Three Cities! First off, “the history is epic,” spanning through centuries of conquerors, battles, and wars. Enclosed within seven kilometres of fortifications, Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua have seen it all. The Knights first built their fortifications here and fought off the Turks during the Great Siege of 1565. Fort St Angelo, the Inquisitor’s Palace and the Maritime Museum are “an essential stop for any visitor” wishing to dive into the Three Cities’ fascinating and extensive history.

Wanderlust also describes the authentic Maltese way of life found within the walls of the cities. Winding through the narrow streets and steep staircases, you’ll find the Maltese living life as they know it: “drinking strong coffee at local cafés, grabbing a quick pastizz (savoury pastry) from a favourite pastizzeria and laughing and gossiping on street corners,” – something we’re experts at! The writer also mentions religious traditions found in the cities, particularly the niches and shrines adorning the corners and backstreets.

Also part of the religious traditions are the locals festas (feasts) and festivals. The most spectacular events are the Easter processions when the statues of the Risen Christ are carried through crowded streets by men, running at pace. Another popular event is the Birgu Light Festival, held in October, where all the street lights are turned off and instead lit up by candlelight, creating a truly magical atmosphere.

Wanderlust also mentions the fact that the baroque capital of Valletta is just a dghajsa (boat) ride away, costing only €2! Now that's certainly a plus. The traditional gondola-style boat has been shuttling people from one side of the harbour to the other for centuries, and is still used today.

And finally, the gorgeous architecture of the Three Cities, particularly old stone townhouses, just make picture-perfect B&Bs! Many townhouses have been renovated into boutique hotels and B&Bs ready to give you a warm Maltese welcome to the islands. “With their intriguing original features, impressive staircases and cool stone walls, they make perfect short break accommodation.”
