What a beauty! Rare seabird spotted in Maltese waters
The last known sighting was back in 2002!

Is it a bird? Is it a penguin? Nope! It's a juvenile razorbill

Daniel Spiteri was on his usual spearfishing adventure when he came across a very rare sight in Maltese waters. A little razorbill zipping by seeming quite close to him.

According to Daniel, who shared the video to the Impetus Spearfishing Facebook page, the last known sighting of the seabird in local waters was in 2002.

What are these penguin-like creatures?

The razorbill is a medium-sized seabird. Its black and white colouring and thick black beak are reminiscent of a penguin's.

According to Daniel, "their breeding habitats are islands, rocky shores, and cliffs on the Northern Atlantic coasts," which may be why this little guy found its way here.

It's important to note that the future of these little ones depends on the health of their habitat, in this case, the marine environment. Unfortunately, fishing nets, pollution, and the ever-declining amount of fish in the ocean threaten these creatures.

So, what can you do to keep this rare creature from dying out?

Help a little guy out. When you spot a piece of plastic in the sea, pick it out and dispose of it properly. This little act can make a world of difference.

Have you ever spotted a rare sea creature?
