The inspiring story of Rebecca Zammit Lupi’s (better known as Becs) brave battle with an aggressive form of bone cancer resonated with us all.

Becs’ father, award-winning photographer Darrin Zammit Lupi, documented this tumultuous and heart-breaking period with a series of photos, perfectly encompassing the family’s journey.

The project was aptly titled ‘The first photo I ever took of my daughter and the last’ and was published on Reuters, thus attracting attention from all over the world.

It just so happens that one of the news sites that picked up on these images was none other than American media giant CNN.

As 2021 approaches its end, CNN published its own project, titled ‘2021: A Year in Pictures’, wherein the photos that best defined this year are shared.

For its January section, the news outlet chose the last heart-shattering photo taken of Becs by her father.

“Nurses Naomi Balzan and Nanette Azzopardi administer painkillers and sedatives to Rebecca Zammit Lupi, a 15-year-old cancer patient, as her mother, Marisa Ford, is by her side at the Mater Dei Hospital in Msida, Malta,” CNN wrote.

“This photo was taken by Rebecca’s father, Reuters photographer Darrin Zammit Lupi. It was the last photo he took of her while she was still alive. She died about an hour later,” the news outlet continued.

Rest in peace, Becs!
