If you haven’t heard of the natural spectacle that takes place at sunrise on the first days of each season at Mnajdra Temples in Qrendi, you’ve been missing out!
The way in which the temples are oriented makes for quite the sight, as the sun’s rays hit the ancient structure at just the right angle. And, while it’s not clear whether these orientations were intentional, they are so systematic that it’s highly likely that they were planned that way by the ancients!
In prehistoric agricultural societies, observation of the motion of the stars, the moon and sun were closely related to the changing seasons and times of planting and harvesting crops.
Each season, Heritage Malta makes it possible for viewers to witness the first sun rays illuminate the temples, and next Wednesday 23rd September from 7am, they’ll be sharing the spectacle via livestream on the Heritage Malta Facebook page.
Now’s your chance to see it for yourself! Will you be joining?
