Tourism Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli has announced that tonight’s grand finale of the Malta International Fireworks Festival be live streamed to avoid large crowds. This comes in light of Malta’s COVID-19 situation, the surge in cases, and possibly MAM's call to ban mass events.

“The final of the Fireworks Festival that was meant to be held in Valletta tonight will only be live streamed on TVM,” the minister announced. “Based on advice from pyrotechnic experts, the fireworks still need to take place because they are already set up on sight. It would be dangerous if these were to be relocated or dismantled,” she explains.

“We took the decision that the annual event that happens on land, next to the ex-pixkerija, is cancelled to avoid the gathering of thousands of people including tourists who normally attend this event,” she announces. “I appeal to the public to watch the spectacle on television.”

In light of this, Heritage Malta has also cancelled their exclusive viewing from Birgu’s Fort St Angelo. People would have experienced the grand finale in a unique way, but unfortunately due to the minister’s directives, this had to be cancelled. There’s always next year!
