Throwback to when ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’ brought gothic horror to Malta’s shores
Before its haunting story hit the big screen, ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’ made waves right here in Malta, transforming parts of the island into eerie, cinematic seascapes and leaving behind unforgettable memories for local film fans and extras alike.
Now, nearly four years after filming wrapped, a behind-the-scenes photo has resurfaced on social media, offering a rare glimpse of a beautifully constructed village market scene, set up along the exterior wall of Fort Ricasoli.
‘Here’s all the stunning Background Artists in this unique harbour scene!’ reads the caption on the throwback post, celebrating the incredible local talent that helped bring the period film to life. Shot in 2021, the production transformed Fort Ricasoli – just by the Film Studios used for countless films shot in Malta – into a shadowy Eastern European port town, setting the scene for Dracula’s voyage aboard the doomed merchant ship, Demeter.
‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’, released in 2023, tells the chilling tale of a crew battling supernatural terror during their journey from Carpathia to England, based on a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s original Dracula novel.
Fort Ricasoli, with its sweeping views over the Grand Harbour and gritty, cinematic stone walls, provided the perfect backdrop for the film’s eerie atmosphere. Known for its appearances in Hollywood blockbusters like Gladiator and Troy, the fort once again proved why it’s one of Malta’s most in-demand filming locations.
