The first day of October is a legitimate reason to start getting your spook on in preparation for Halloween at the end of the month. And this local makeup artist is wasting no time!
Meet 20-year-old Ella Grimmant, a makeup artist specialising in SFX effects, creating super realistic (and creepy!) looks that are the perfect inspo for your Halloween costume. You haven’t thought of one yet? Whatchu waiting for, hun? We spoke to Ella about her creations, but heads up – gory incoming!
“I have been doing SFX makeup for just over two years now. I’ve been working at scare attractions since 2016 and that’s where my inspiration started!” she says. “I remember raiding all my nearest Halloween stores for scary makeup and I just started practicing and teaching myself.” And well, the rest is history.
Ella also explains that some looks are obviously more difficult than others to achieve. “The hardest look I’ve probably created is the ‘sliced fingers look.’ So much practice has gone into perfecting that look – it requires so much patience but it really pays off in the end!”
Ella says that she and her family love Halloween and have always celebrated the holiday. “I don’t think a year has gone by that we haven’t gotten into the Halloween spirit! People are always looking for Halloween makeup ideas and costumes around this time of year, so to be able to help people create some creepy costumes and ideas with my SFX is always extremely rewarding,” she admits.
As hard as it may be, we asked which look was her absolute fave so far. “I love them all dearly, but if I had to choose one it would have to be the ‘torn mouth’ one. It was so much fun creating that look, and it was very satisfying seeing how much everyone loved it too.”
