Then & Now! 1950s snap reveals the Blue Lagoon as you’ve never seen it before
Is that Marilyn Monroe?

Sarah Micallef

There’s no question that the crystal-clear waters of the Blue Lagoon in Comino make it one of the most beautiful spots in Malta. Owing to its beauty, the beach is often among the busiest on the islands during the summer months – but as this stunning 1950s photo shows, it hasn’t always been the case!

In the nostalgic snap, a woman that bears a striking resemblance to 1950s screen siren Marilyn Monroe makes her way to the bay, where a striped tent (which was quite commonplace at the time) awaits. Just behind her, a pair of fishermen go about their business on a traditional Maltese luzzu, with a couple of nets secured to the back.

The same site tends to look a little different nowadays, with several umbrellas and deckchairs laid out for the myriad visitors the island receives on a daily basis.

It’s no less stunning though, and if you’re smart, you can still experience the Blue Lagoon in relative silence today. In the summer months, it’s worth getting up early to visit the little island with the first boat, but in winter, it’s generally a quiet haven, and while swimming may be out of the question, it’s a beauty for hikers!
