The heat is on in Malta this weekend – here’s how to cool down!
Drop it like it’s hot.

1. Take a dip in a pool

It’s always a challenge trying to figure out what to do on a scorching summer’s day, but three priorities usually top our list: fresh air, some space and cool water. Lidos usually do the trick and there are many to choose from on the islands, each catering to a different personality type, whether you’re an uninhibited singleton or come with two kids in tow. Most require an entrance fee, which is deducted off the lunch bill in some cases, making this not such a cheap option – though it is definitely a treat.

2. Eat some ice-cream…or gelato

If you’re counting your pennies, there is an inexpensive way to cool down – ice-cream. And there’s always somewhere you can grab one of these more-ish summer essentials, whatever your plans for the day. For those who know a thing or two about the sweet, the rich Italian gelato is also found in many artisanal or speciality stores, so you won’t have to skimp on luxury if you don’t have to.

3. Discover new spots to swim

While most people will flock to the popular beaches of Ghadira, close to the centre of Mellieha, or Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha closer to Manikata – so much so that it’s nigh on impossible to find parking in the environs on the weekend – why not take the road less travelled and discover some hidden spots? Imgiebah bay, for example, near Selmun, is a bit of a tricky drive down (hence the noticeable lack of crowds), but boasts golden sand and clear waters and is worth the trip.

4. Have a drink on a rooftop bar

On really hot days, you can easily step out of the shower and immediately feel your sweat glands doing their nasty job. The only remedy is to head outdoors, to one of the many bars or restaurants hugging the streets, shores and marinas of the island. But if you want a bit of a view as well, head upstairs to a rooftop joint and order an aperitif to cradle as the sun starts to set.

5. Dine alfresco

It’s sometimes difficult to work up an appetite when the blistering sun has been hammering the island all day long, but you might get it back once you settle into a chair in one of the restaurants enjoying an outdoor terrace, or a spot on one of the capital’s many squares. Be sure to book before though – it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find a good table at a well-regarded restaurant unless you pre-plan a bit.

6. Watch a film – or a play - under the stars

Cool entertainment should not be limited to imbibing some booze or scoffing down your dinner. And, indeed, it is not. You can watch films for free with the travelling Solar Cinema, who are moving from village to village serving up delightful treats of environmentally-conscious movies, or head to the Kinemastik Short Film Festival in a few days’ time at the Msida Garden of Rest. MADC is in the home-run of its Shakespeare in the Park this weekend if you prefer your art performed live, with the sound of the breeze rustling the leaves in San Anton Gardens.
