Steer clear! Dangerous jellyfish spotted on Maltese beach
And definitely do not touch!

Jillian Mallia

Gorgeous isn't it? Well, looks can be deceiving! The dangerous jellyfish species known as the Portuguese man o’war was recently found at Ghajn Tuffieha Bay in Malta, and while our islands are used to jellyfish entering our waters (and ruining our summer days at the beach), this one's a far rarer sight.

The jellyfish

While the cold weather means we won't be thinking of taking a dip any time soon (phew!), the sting on this little guy is so potent that even when washed up on the beach, it isn't safe. No matter how tempting it is, DO NOT TOUCH this species if you come across it - even when dead, the venom in its sting is still very much active, so steer clear! We don’t want to risk a nasty sting now do we?

Treating a sting

In case curiosity does get the better of you and the jellyfish releases its venom, don't panic! Apply a hot pack and run the stung area under hot water. Going the usual route and applying vinegar or alcohol can intensify the pain sensation when it comes to these guys, and can trigger further stinging cells. Ouch.
