So cute or hell no? Should dogs be allowed in Maltese shops?
Yay or nay?

A recent post on social media has sparked a heated national debate (our favourite kind) about whether or not dogs should be allowed to accompany their owners within retail stores. The post was specifically targeting the week-old, seven-storey Zara store in Sliema, urging dog owners to “do what the rest of us do and take along a bored partner to sit and wait for you to try on your clothes!”

In true Maltese fashion, comments flowed, in all directions, with emotions running high. Issoltu (the usual), as we say in Maltese. So we thought, why not open it up to retail stores in Malta in general: should dogs be allowed in Maltese shops?

Arguments for

1. Dogs vs kids

“But if Fido is not allowed why are kids, who usually make a mess as well, allowed in clothes shops?!” asked one indignant Facebook user. Dogs and kids seem to be on par for this one. Some retaliated with “Because kids are humans, and dogs are animals” and uh, I don't know about you, but we’re getting into murky, scientific waters here, so I’ll just end this now, and let you guys have it out in the comments section…

2. Good doggy

One friend said that “if the dog is well behaved, I don’t see why not.” If they’re quiet and stay by the owner’s side, then it doesn’t seem to be a problem.

3. Guide dogs

One friend, who is a dog owner (of a handsome golden Labrador if I might add) said that “guide dogs or service dogs should be allowed. No question.” She also says that if there is a dog in a store, she wouldn’t mind. An excuse to pet another cute four-legged friend!

Arguments against

1. Inconvenience

Both dog owners and non-dog owners have claimed that bringing dogs to the shops is an inconvenience. One dog owner said “I adore my dogs, but I wouldn’t imagine having them around me all the time!”

2. Unenjoyable for the both of you

One Facebook user said, “I don’t know what anyone wants to take their dog with them when shopping. I’m sure the dog doesn’t enjoy it either!” Your dog will most likely be bored, so they’ll find anything to chew on or amuse themselves with (even a clothes hanger), so you’ll constantly be keeping your eye on little Fido.

3. Hassle central

Another of my dog-owning friends said that his dog, like many, will just find a nice spot near an expensive garment and pee all over it. “He’ll just leave pools of pee behind and damage something and I’ll have to pay for it!” No. Thank. Youuu!

What do you think about this whole debacle?
