Yesterday brought about some much needed yet unexpected rain over the Maltese islands, offering us a quick break from August’s relentless heat.

Luckily, it now looks like we’re in for another day of rain today, with showers having already started all across Gozo.

“Another day of showers across the Maltese Islands today. Once again, they will be heavy at times”, the ‘Maltese Islands Weather’ page wrote on Facebook.

The showers are expected to last until tomorrow.

Rain aside, yesterday’s bad weather also brought a long a whirlwind in San Lawrenz, Gozo.

“A whirlwind is a common phenomenon in which atmospheric instability near the ground causes a vortex to form. This was a minor whirlwind. Local winds started to spin on the ground. This spinning is probably initiated by local topography and buildings,” ‘Maltese Islands Weather’ wrote.

“The funnel becomes visible as it picks up dust and debris from the ground. Whirlwinds can be quite strong, but normally last only briefly. They are very common across the Maltese islands in the autumn months,” it continued.

This change in weather is largely due to strong currents of cool air taking over across the Mediterranean. Despite this, however, temperatures are still expected to reach highs 31°C until the weekend.
