The Maltese Islands are home to many stunning historical monuments.
The fortresses surrounding the Grand Harbour area are among the most jaw-dropping historical sites in Malta, and the world. However, many - including locals, have rarely ventured inside and have only seen the towering fortresses at a distance or through photos.

One recently unearthed pic shows a rare angle to Fort St Elmo. While it is mostly the upper side that takes centre stage in photos, this particular picture highlights the beauty of Lower St Elmo.
Posted to popular history Facebook group Malta Lura Fil Passat, the picture drew the confusion of many, with people struggling to pin down the exact location.
Others compared the building to Pieta's iconic Villa Frere and likened it to the sun house there.
This exact site was used for the filming of 1978 film Midnight Express, in which many Maltese had worked either in the production crew or as extras. The fortress as a whole has been used for multiple theatre productions, fashion shows and international conferences.
Have you ever seen this side of Fort St Elmo?
