This month brings an explosion of Malta's music and opera scene, with a number of musical productions taking place around the islands.

The Manoel Theatre's annual major opera new production this year is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni with Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. This year's performance will be directed by Jack Furness and conducted by Philip Walsh. Following the 2017 production of Le Nozze di Figaro, this is the second of the three Mozart/Da Ponte operas which the theatre is presenting in a row.

Canadian flutist Rebecca Hall has been at the forefront of music in Malta since moving to the island in 1996, while apart from her work as a prolific soloist and chamber music player, Lucia Micallef has been artistic director of several festivals and other cultural activities. Together, Rebecca Hall (flute) and Lucia Micallef (piano) will perform G.F. Handel: Three Arias from Acis and Galatea, C.E. Gluck: Minuet and Dance of the Blessed Spirits (Orfeo), W. A. Mozart: A Mozart trilogy (non so piu, aura amorosa, Come Scoglio), Donizetti: Sonata for flute and piano, F. Chopin: Variations on Cenerentola, Gershwin: Summertime from Porgy and Bess, and Bizet/Borne: Fantasie Brilliante sur Carmen.

Maltese Soprano Miriam Gauci has proven to be a deeply touching interpreter in various roles, notably Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, Angelica and Mimì. This year, on March 10th at St Augustine's Church, Miriam Gauci with the Goldberg Ensemble conducted by Michael Laus will perform Church Sonatas K67, K328, K336, Quere superna K143, Tantum ergo K142, Agnus Dei from Coronation Mass K317, Offertorium pro festo Stii Ioanni Baptistae K72, Te Deum K141, Miserere K85, Ave verum corpus K618, and Laudate Dominum from Vesperae solemnes de Confessore K339.

Ida Kelarova invites the best of Czech and Slovak musicians to collaborate on this music formation, which links Romani harmonies and Latin-American rhythms to the sound of a jazz band. The locally-based Organic Choir will open for the show, and besides classical compositions from previous albums and folk Romani songs, the repertoire also covers new songs composed by the lead singer and guitarist, Desiderius Dužda, while Ida Kelarova unleashes her legendary voice into this passionate performance.

Renowned pianist and conductor Michael Laus was the principal conductor of Malta’s national orchestra between 1991-2014, and has been invited to guest conduct several other prestigious orchestras. He has appeared on Rai 3, France 3 and Mezzo television channels, and is Associate Professor in Music Performance at the University of Malta. In this piano recital, he will perform Schubert: 3 Piano Pieces D946, Schubert/Liszt: Der Muller und der Bach, Die Forelle, Ständchen, Auf der wasser zu singen, and Liszt: La lugubre gondola no.2.

To mark and celebrate the beginning of spring, The European Day of Early Music is held every year on 21st March. This is also the birthday of Early Music's period most relevant and known composers Johann Sebastian Bach. VIBE (Valletta International Baroque Ensemble) perform in Malta simultaneously with other concerts across Europe to celebrate more than a millennium of music.

Astra Theatre has announced the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar to highlight the 50th anniversary celebrations of the theatre. This is the third consecutive musical being staged by the Astra Theatre, following the debut with Grease in 2016 and Evita in 2017. A double representation of Jesus Christ Superstar is scheduled for the weekend preceding Easter, on Saturday 24th March at 8pm, followed up by a matinee performance on Palm Sunday, 25th March at 3:30pm.

Praised by musicians, audiences, and music critics as an “enfant terrible of Maltese piano”, Charlene Farrugia is one of the most prominent performers of the younger generation. Icelandic clarinetist Dimitri Ashkenazy has given concerts all over the world, including at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, the Sydney Opera House, in London's Royal Festival Hall, the Salzburg Festival, the Rudolfinum in Prague and at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. On this special night, Dimitri Ashkenazy (clarinet) and Charlene Farrugia (piano) will perform Brahms: Sonata No.2 in E flat major, Op.120/2, Poulenc: Sonata, Debussy: Première Rhapsodie, and Brahms: Sonata No.1 in F minor, Op.120/1.
