Awguri, as we say in Maltese to this local music legend! Joe Grech is celebrating his 87th birthday today and we’re taking a look back at some of his notable life moments.

Joe was born in 1934 in Bormla and was the one to introduce the Maltese language to foreign audiences when he represented Malta for the first time in 1971 with the iconic song ‘Marija l-Maltija.’ (Cue the: Paparapapajjaaa!)

The musician also used to play in the Zejtun Band Club but then he decided to focus solely on singing. He became the first winner of the Malta Song Festival in 1960 with his song, ‘Vola Uccellino.’

Two years later, he once again won the festival which spring boarded to participation in international festivals in Canada, America, Australia, Ireland, Scotland and England.
