“Explore the beautiful coastline, lavish churches, forts and historic sites of Malta before charter loads of beach-goers arrive. Spring may bring more sun and less rainfall (by May you can swim in the sea), but you're here for figolli, a special Easter dessert,” says writer Kyle McCarthy.

And of course, he’s right. The Maltese Islands really come into their own in springtime, as the winter coat shifts to reveal lush vegetation, along with a host of much-loved Easter traditions. Going on to discuss the Maltese Easter sweet, the article describes figolli as “almond cakes flavoured with orange blossom water and marzipan filling. Typically coated in vanilla royal icing, some are blinged out with a foil-wrapped chocolate egg for the holiday. While they're mostly shaped like rabbits, butterflies or Easter eggs; food bloggers should watch for ones shaped like men or women.”

Local hotel chain Corinthia also gets a special mention when it comes to places to stay in Malta, particularly for its “Easter Sunday lunch with a choice of traditional fish or lamb dishes.”

So what are you waiting for? Head over to the Maltese Islands this spring – you won’t be sorry!
