It's not all about the sun! 10 breathtaking shots of Maltese cloudy skies
Cloudy days, we salute you

Kristina Cassar Dowling

Malta is known for its 300+ days of sunshine but we tend to forget about the spectacular cloud formations over our tiny islands. Our crystal clear skies are sometimes accompanied by a field of clouds that act as the perfect juxtaposition to the wondrous views on the land below. Ten shots aren’t enough to capture the best of cloudy days in the Maltese islands but here are some of the very best:

Over the capital

Malta’s capital is best observed from the Sliema promenade; the skyline is stunning and, although it’s usually photographed with immaculate skies and warm rays of sunshine, the mighty power of the thick velvet fog is absolutely mind-blowing.

The many shades of pink

The greys, the blues, the absolute white but my, oh my…the pinks! When the sky turns pink and the clouds above intensify that tint, the world becomes a magical place. The energy you receive from such a miraculous site is uplifting - each and every time.

Over the valleys

No matter the colour, the build up of clouds over a rural or urban setting gets the locals excited for a break from the intense heat. When a storm’s on its way, half the population gets ready for a weekend indoors, the other half longs for the sunshine to get back into full effect.

Clusters over fields

A drive through the countryside is always welcomed with open arms and a killer Spotify playlist to accompany it. The smashing clouds that carpet the skies are an added bonus to your joyride after a long week in the office.

A cover over Filfla

Whenever you head to the cliffs on the west coast of Malta, Filfla is most definitely the highlight. No matter how far in the distance it may seem, the clouds that form above the tiny island seem to connect you with the beauty of the little rock.

At the edge of glory

A trek along the cliffs…ahh…the beauty. The sea, the garigue, the fresh air and, of course, the sky. The colonies of clouds that form here and there add that extra dimension to the natural wonders that surround you.

When the storm’s brewing

The stillness of the water, the rocking luzzu in the distance, and a few passers-by might even catch your eye but your pure focus is set on the deep grays that soar above you. A storm has the power to alter your day, to change your mood and, even, to get you drenched in a matter of seconds.

The unobstructed view

Finding yourself an unobstructed view in Malta is relatively easy if you make your way to the more secluded areas where nature and the environment are somewhat respected. And when this epic situation hits, the results are stupidly fantastic!

The perfect setting

This is Malta. This is our glorious island in all its glory! From high up, the golden sands below are wonderful, the mesh of the blues from the sea and sky melt your heart and highlights brushed through the heavens, as the wisps of cloud gently embellish your afternoon view.

A cloud can serve a thousand purposes. It can alter your mood in an instant, condition your weekend or even inspire you to create something amazing!
